Thanks for your insider's view, love2teach! I'm relieved to hear that the reality of the situation is pretty far off the kids' perception. And, trust me, I'll be sharing this fact with my son.

There is no cell phone in this 5th graders house and there won't be. As a 5th grade teacher, many kids say they have a cell phone, but it's their parents that have been borrowed for a field trip, sleepover, sport practice, etc. They thinks it is "everyone"

MoltoMom, I think you've got all the core values down and any future woman will be lucky to have you as her mother-in-law. I just hope SHE'S worthy! ; )

Good for you, Cre8tive Mom! There are way too many judgmental people in this world...being a parent to finicky eaters is tough and you just gotta do the best you can. Believe me, I know!

A great thing to do is to just sit on the floor with your kids and let them lead you in play. Make eye contact and give them your full attention. Kids love it when you engage them this way.

My other advice is to turn off the TV. We have friends who leave the TV on all the time, even when no one is watching it. Even when no one is in the room! Turn off the TV! It's distracting to everyone, limits conversation, and has been proven to be bad for kids.

Kudos to you for limiting your computer time. It's difficult to break away from it and it's very habit forming!

Could have been much, much worse. At least the house didn't catch fire and there were no trips to the emergency room. :) Smile and be happy that you got a night out!!!

I hear you, MoltoMom! I feel the same way. And when the worlds collide, I'm trying to do many things at once but none of them come out terribly well. I just may make that corporate mumbo-jumbo my new mantra..."Be here now. Be here now!"

Sadly, my 10-year old son has already heard that same word at school. It was clear to him that this was a "bad" word, but he had no clue what it meant. My husband and I explained to him that this is THE worst name you could call someone (and on the cussing scale, it ranks #1--beating out the dreaded F-word); that it's demeaning and hateful toward another race and no one should ever say it.

I do have an embarassing bad language moment to share too. When my 10-year old was just 2 and getting fussy on a road trip, I busted out the name game to keep him entertained. Note to all moms out there...don't play the name game with the word "truck."
